While the popularity of identity politics is on the rise, for those on the spiritual path we’re moving in the opposite direction.
Instead of continuing to refine your answer to the question: Who Am I?
We ask… Who Am I when I allow everything to drop away?
When I acknowledge that I am not all of the personality traits, sexual or any other preference, posessions, qualities, skills, gender, talents and flaws?
When I enter into a process of shedding the attachment to all of those things as a way of saying… THIS is Who I Am.
Who Are You Then?
Because none of them are permanent. In this one lifetime alone, I’ve lived so many stories. I’ve been so many things. I’ve played all kinds of roles.
But none of them are me. If you take any/all of them away, I’m the same essence that existed when they were there.
Sometimes it takes great sacrifice or loss to understand this. For things to fall apart in the most spectacular of ways.
Until we’re challenged and questioned on who we think we are, of course we will assume all those qualities we’ve always lived with are an essential part of who we are. But they are not.
You are not your…
- Sexual preference
- Dietary requirements
- Exercise preferences
- Image or clothes
- Hair, skin or weight
- Piercings or tattoos
- Physical abilities or lack thereof
- Possessions (house, car etc)
(Feel free to add to this list in the comments!)
Underneath ALL of it, there’s a Divine Sameness.
An eternal field of awareness that is YOU. The witness. The participator. The conscious and unconscious. You are everything you witness and believe is NOT you. You are very air you breathe.
All of this is YOU. You are not your possessions or qualities. You never were.
You are a spark of universal consciousness clothed in human form, who has temporarily forgotten the way home.
