A question I receive from time to time is…
How do I choose an oracle card set for myself?
Since the question comes up semi-regularly, I thought I’d write a lil post on the topic.
What the heck are oracle cards anyway?
The simplest answer is that they’re a lovely and gentle way to help you connect to your intuition.
Oracle cards include a series of messages of inner reflection, combined with beautiful imagery. Each oracle card deck has its own theme such as: angels, fairies, numerology, animals, mermaids and many others.
There’s usually a companion booklet that expands on the meaning of each card, too.
What can you use them for?
As mentioned, they can be a useful tool to connect you to your intuition, Higher Self and hidden emotions.
If you’re interested in working with your spirit guides and/or guardian or arch angels, they can also help you learn to communicate with them more fully, too.
I use them for myself personally, and as my clients know, they often make an appearance in Kinesiology sessions.
There can be periods where I use them nearly every day. I own multiple decks, and I’ll muscle test myself to figure out which one will serve me best.
In Kinesiology sessions, sometimes I’ll be led by my intuition to start with an oracle reading, but more often than not they will occasionally test up for a client when “more information” is indicated, to gain deeper clarity around something we’re working through.
They’re always astoundingly accurate and on-message for whatever we’re doing in a session.
Side note: I recall a time where I was all… What’s the point in pulling an oracle card? The messages are generic, right?
The beauty of oracle readings is not the generic message, but how that message or related imagery connects to your current circumstances?
They can be a leap-off point for inner thought and inspiration.
How to choose a deck…
So, you’ve seen other people use oracle cards and you’d like a deck for yourself. Awesome!
Only… where do you start?
Some shops stock almost every available deck there is, whilst others curate their collection. But there are Literally. Hundreds. To. Choose. From.
It can be confusing!
Especially if you feel like you don’t want to “make a mistake”.
{ Hint: you really can’t! }
Who are some of the major players in the oracle deck world?
My main go-to these days is The Liquid Crystals oracle card deck (as well as The Liquid Crystal remedies)
Hay House publishes Doreen Virtue’s MANY card decks as well as sets from other authors.
Blue Angel also publishes many sets (including Lucy Cavendish decks, and Kuan Yin).
Inna Segal has the lovely Colour Cards.
Animal Dreaming Publishing offers several fabulous decks.
And I know several people who own and love the Energy Oracle card deck.
Tips for figuring out which set to buy!
- Don’t be overwhelmed! Choosing your first deck(s) is something you can use your intuition to help guide you to select! Let it be fun. There’s no wrong choice.
- Start with 1 or 2 sets and get to know them before you expand your collection.
- Doreen Virtue’s cards are always a good place to start, but even she has a HOST of different sets.
- Basically you can get caught up in having ALL THE CARDS, but you guys, it’s totes okay to have just one set!
- On the flip side, if you totally dig oracle cards, it’s cool if you DO have All. The. Cards!
- Allow yourself to relax, and take a few deep breaths. Hold the intention in your heart to be drawn to the set that will be best for you right now. Don’t over-think it, just go with what feels right.
Where can you buy them?
- Big W (in Australia) keeps a small stock of Doreen Virtue decks. True story: it’s where I bought my first set!
- Many of the hippie/new age shops in your part of the world will stock them.
- You can buy decks online from Book Depository, Amazon, the author’s websites, publisher websites and probably half a dozen other places, like eBay.
And finally… how do you use them?
There’s plenty of options re: how to use and read oracle cards.
Hot tip: tap the deck three times before first use and between each reading, with the intention to clear the deck of any non-related energy.
The companion books that come with each set will give you some guidelines on how to use them, too.
The simplest option is a three card spread
Ask a question that you’d like some guidance on, shuffle the deck and choose three cards that feel right. The first card represents the past, the second represents the present and the last card, the future.
Take time to reflect on the messages and how they relate to your own life and situation.
If they don’t relate, don’t panic!
You didn’t do anything wrong, I promise!
It could be that the purpose of the message comes later, or perhaps it just wasn’t right. Sometimes card readings aren’t accurate and that’s cool, too.
The more you work with the cards, the more connected to your intuition you’ll get
So keep going!
I hope this guide is helpful
Good luck with your oracle card readings, and have fun!

Hello
I bought my very first oracle deck today. John Holland.
Felt great too. The shop owner explained a few things to me and I was so grateful.
Was not a great selection but a good one. I was drawn more to ‘The Spirit Messages…
I look forward to my first time using them. I’m new and starting out again after 11 years on trying to meditate.
Mainly bought them to read for myself and in the hope of one day learning to read for and help others.
Hi Rosie, that’s wonderful! Wishing you lots of fun and inspiration as you learn how to use your cards. 🙂
