Have you heard of the term cognitive dissonance?
This is when we experience stress and confusion due to holding several conflicting views or beliefs.
Right now, en-masse we’re experiencing layers of cognitive dissonance.
You might discover that people you thought you had lots in common with have very different views from you about this pandemic.
We’re also being told we can’t trust ourselves or anyone else
We’re not being encouraged to build a healthy immune system or to learn about the benefits of doing so (imagine that!).
There are endless variations of personal experience in lockdown.
From the frazzled mamas who are perhaps trying to work from home AND home school their kids, to the people doing lock down all alone.
There are those who already have chronic health conditions, and the introverts who think staying at home is wonderful. There are these who’ve lost jobs, or their businesses.
There are also people experiencing homeless or feeling unsafe in their own homes (aka being locked in with an abusive partner*).
Also, people who’s mental health is under fire with the massive increase in fear and anxiety.
Fear causes us all to act and react in ways we wouldn’t otherwise behave
Survival patterns are heightened, and our poor HPA axis (hypothalamus, pituitary and adrenal) and stress response are taxed.
There are endless permutations to the layers of cognitive dissonance going on right now.
The world is not what it was and it might not be for some time, if ever.
It can be hard to accept this, especially for those of us who’ve lived a relatively privileged lifestyle until now!
It makes sense that we’re all finding this hard in different ways
This can cause us to turn on each other. Blame anyone who thinks differently to us. Spend a lot of time and energy telling others how wrong they are.
When we don’t have answers (and we really don’t!), then our minds like to fill in the blanks with what we think.
It’s important to keep examining our thoughts and beliefs. Keep turning them over. Don’t let any of it concretise.
Because truthfully we won’t know the full story of this pandemic for some time. We are all living in the question mark.
So stay true to yourself.
Research how to boost your immune system. Hint: eat well, hydrate, exercise, sleep well.
Take care of yourself and be kind to others.
